Summer In Susie's Vineyard
Liz@MaderaPW
As spring and May come to an end, so does the thinning of the vines. The length and timing of the thinning varies, as each of the varietals we grow move at their own pace, like the determined 73 year olds that they are. Throughout the summer we’ll continue our practice of modified deficit irrigation. The soil will be monitored closely, and the vines will only be watered as needed. The methods of pruning, thinning, and irrigation we practice are specifically designed to limit the yield to between 3 and 4 tons per acre. This ensures small, dense fruit with a desirable, concentrated flavor. Growers love winemakers, but our distinctive Ports begin in Susie’s vineyard. Enjoy these grape “baby” pics.
