Portuguese Varietals
Distinctive Ports begin in the vineyard.
Madera Port Works is proud to offer limited specialty Ports made from Portuguese varietals rarely grown in California today. The Touriga Nacional, Tinta Madera, Tinta Cão, and Souzão grapes that we use come exclusively from our 70 year old, 37 acre family vineyard. The vineyard was planted with a 1613 rootstock in 1943, and the following year grafted with scion wood from UC Davis. The vines are mature, healthy and robust, and the tonnage is purposefully limited to 3-4 tons per acre to ensure small, dense fruit with concentrated and long-lasting flavors. We ripen to 26-28 brix before harvest, crushing, and fortification. Only the finest brandy is used.
Each varietal has a unique profile, and will greet the palate in its own way.
- Touriga Nacional • Robust, brambleberry and full fruit flavor, distinctive aroma.
- Tinta Madeira • Bright berry and cherry flavors, detectable spice.
- Tinta Cão • subtle fruit, lighter intensity, soft in texture.
- Souzão • Aromatic, deepest in color, intense black cherry and dark fruit flavors.
Beautiful independently, they can be blended or used as an addition to dry wines to create a rich mosaic of flavors.
The vines in Susie's Vineyard, gnarled and laden with character, bear fruit almost as bright and beautiful as the woman for which they were named.
